French Onion Potato Squares with Toppings

Lipton Onion Potato Squares are a side dish my Mom always made with steak or pork chops on the grill. At the time, I was not a huge fan of either, I was just there for these potatoes. I can remember my sisters and I fighting over the last serving of these. They are excellent on their own, but they really remind me of a loaded baked potato once you add the toppings to it. If you have left over potatoes, you can easily throw them in your breakfast burrito the next morning for extra flavor. This is my husband’s families number one requested side dish I make.

Ingredients for Lipton Onion Potato Squares

  • 5 lb bag Russet potatoes
  • 1 stick butter, melted
  • Lipton onion soup mix, dry seasoning
  • Toppings: Sour cream, cheese, bacon, chives

Utensils Needed

Directions for Lipton Onion Potato Squares

Prep Time: 15 – 30 minutes / Cook Time: 45 minutes – 1 hour

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Wash potatoes. Optional, peel skin off.
  3. Then, using a knife and cutting board, dice potatoes.
  4. In a greased 9 x 13 baking dish, or larger. Place diced potatoes.
  5. Once all potatoes are diced, melt your butter.
  6. Dump butter all over potatoes.
  7. Then, dump Lipton onion soup mix over potatoes, stir.
  8. Place in over for about 45 minutes.
  9. I usually stir about half way through.
  10. I check the potatoes at 30 minutes, 45 minutes, and 1 hour. A fork or knife should slice through a potato like butter. (Make sure to check potatoes in a couple spots).
  11. If you are using a large pan than 9 x 13, it may take closer to 30 minutes. If you are using a thick ceramic pan, it make take closer to 1 hour.

Variations

  • You could easily add a diced onion in with the potatoes.
  • These potatoes are good on their own. I love to add loaded baked potato toppings.
  • You could easily make these for breakfast and throw them in a burrito for extra flavor.
  • The butter could be replaced with olive oil.
  • If you want to bake this a little quicker, you can bump the temp to 425 degrees. I would still check at the 30 minute mark.
