Christmas Puppy Chow

Puppy Chow is one of those snacks I remember coming home after school and making with my sisters. We would take turns shaking the bag or dumping an ingredient in the bag. I decided why not take this recipe a step further and make Christmas Puppy Chow. This recipe is great to make with kids as they can easily help throughout the entire process. You can easily divide into small bags for basket stuffers or party favors. Or you can leave it in a large festive container for a holiday party. I loved Puppy Chow as a kid and to this day, it is one of my favorite things to snack on.

Ingredients for Christmas Puppy Chow

  • 1 stick butter
  • 1/2 cup or more peanut butter
  • 1 bag chocolate chips
  • 1 and 1/2 boxes Rice Chex (12 cups)
  • 2 cups or more powdered sugar
  • Christmas M&M’s
  • Bag mini Reese’s peanut butter cups
  • Red and green sprinkles

Utensils Needed

Directions for Christmas Puppy Chow

Prep Time: 20 – 30 minutes / Dry time: 1 hour

  1. In your microwave safe bowl place chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter. (I like extra peanut butter so I use closer to 1 cup. I also just eye ball this, no need to measure exactly.)
  2. Microwave for 1 minute, then stir.
  3. Microwave 30 seconds at a time, then stir. Repeat until smooth and completely melted.
  4. In your large mixing bowl, dump Chex into it. Or if using a brown paper bag, dump Chex in that. (I double line my brown paper bag as powdered sugar will sometimes leak out the bottom with one).
  5. Next, dump chocolate mixture over Chex and fold in using a spatula. If using a brown paper bag, dump chocolate mixture into bag, roll up and shake.
  6. Once Chex is covered in chocolate mixture, dump half your powdered sugar in and mix in bowl. Or shake your brown paper bag. (I just dump straight from a bag and slowly mix in more as needed, does not have to be measured).
  7. Continue to add powdered sugar until Chex are completely coated with powdered sugar.
  8. Once coated, add your sprinkles and mix.
  9. On a table, place your tin foil or wax paper. I do two rows. Then a third strip right in the middle.
  10. Next, dump Puppy Chow onto tin foil or wax paper and spread out to let dry for one hour.
  11. After Puppy Chow has dried for an hour, add the M&M’s and mini Reese’s cups.
  12. Next, place Puppy Chow into container or ziplock bag. Everything will mix up as you place in container. You can mix on foil by hand before placing into container if you want to mix extra.

Variations

  • You can use any sort of Chex cereal: rice, corn, chocolate…
  • If you would like standard puppy chow, leave out sprinkles, M&M’s, and Reese’s.
  • You could interchange colors of M&M’s and sprinkles for different holidays or for gender reveal parties.
  • You can change out M&M type: peanut butter, brownie, or sugar cookie.
