Low Carb Taco Shells, yum, I could eat these plain. I actually enjoy these over a flour tortilla now, but I also love cheese! I got into making these when I was keeping everything low carb. Someone was asking me about some low carb options for meals and I had suggested these. They had never heard of them and wanted to know how to make them. So I decided to go ahead and add the recipe to my site as it is so easy. Make sure to start checking them at 10 minutes, as the cheese will burn and it will taste burnt too. I hope you all enjoy these as much as I do.
Ingredients for Low Carb Taco Shells
- 8 oz shredded cheese
- Taco toppings: meat, sour cream, cheese, rice, beans, lettuce, hot sauce
Utensils Needed
- Baking sheet
- Parchment paper
Directions for Low Carb Taco Shells
Prep Time: 1 minute / Cook Time: 10 – 15 minutes
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
- Place a piece of parchment paper down on your baking sheet.
- I split the 8 ounces of cheese into 4 even piles onto the parchment paper.
- Then I spread the cheese out flat into a circle.
- Place in the oven for 10 minutes.
- Check on the cheese, may need a few additional minutes.
- It is done when it has a hint of brown around the edge.
- I let cool as is for about 5 minutes.
- Top with your favorite taco toppings and enjoy!
Variations
- You can use about any shredded cheese. I use pre-packaged fine shredded sharp cheddar cheese.
- I roll my taco up, so that is what I do with this, I roll them.
- Some recipes like this, has you set them like a hard shell. I do not crisp the cheese extra, as it easily gets a burnt taste to it. Feel free to go this route.
- If you are wanting to keep with low carb then add taco meat. Beans and rice will add carbs.
- I actually prefer this shell over a flour tortilla now. I did place one of these inside a flour tortilla for my husband, he said it was amazing that way!
- You can easily change this into many other recipes. Use mozzarella and add tuna for a low carb tuna melt. Add steak and peppers with pepper jack cheese for a low carb Philly cheese steak. So many options here.
- I do dab with a paper towel to pick up the grease as cheese does get greasy when baking like this.
