Hanky Panks Plated

Hanky Panks are one of those recipes I rarely make as I am not a huge fan of pumpernickel bread or sausage. But everyone in my family growing up loved this recipe. We always had this recipe with my Homemade Potato Soup recipe. But really this recipe can go with about any soup or can be served as an appetizer. When I made them this time, I used my heart shaped cookie cutter to cut the bread into hearts. You could use any shape or get the party square pumpernickel loaf. You could get football cookie cutter and make these for a football tailgate even.

Ingredients for Hanky Panks

  • 1 lb Original Jimmy Dean’s sausage
  • 8 oz cream cheese
  • Party square pumpernickel loaf

Utensils Needed

Directions for Hanky Panks

Prep Time: 20 minutes / Cook Time: 10 minutes

  1. Preheat over to 350 degrees.
  2. Place sausage in your sauté pan and turn to medium – high heat.
  3. Using the meat chopper, ground the sausage up and cook.
  4. While the sausage cooks, place pumpernickel bread into rows on cookie sheet, set aside.
  5. Once sausage is cooked, turn the burner to medium – low heat.
  6. Drain the sausage using the strainer if needed.
  7. Now, add the cream cheese to the sausage and mix until well combined.
  8. Turn burner off and remove sausage mixture from burner.
  9. Using the spoon, spoon mixture onto bread. Repeat for all slices of bread.
  10. Place cookie sheet into oven for 7-10 minutes.
  11. Remove and serve as a side or appetizer.

Variations

  • You can use any sausage, but we prefer the Original Jimmy Dean’s.
  • You can swap out the cream cheese for Velveeta. We aren’t huge on Velveeta, so we stick with cream cheese.
