Homemade Ham Gravy

Homemade Ham Gravy is a lot easier to make then most people would think. It is also interchangeable with ham, turkey, or chicken. My favorite part about homemade gravy is the cream that is added. I love a creamy gravy with my mashed potatoes. It’s liquid gold on Thanksgiving! I will warn you the recipe that is linked has an odd order of adding the ingredients which tends to lead to chunky gravy. I would highly suggest following my directions, but do as you want.

  • 1 cup ham drippings
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 cup whole milk

Utensils Needed

  • Sauté pan
  • Whisk

  2. In your sauté pan, over medium heat, melt your butter.
  3. Next, add your flour and whisk for 2-3 minutes. It should start to turn a bit brown, but not burnt.
  4. Add your drippings a little at a time and whisk until smooth.
  5. Add your milk and whisk until smooth.
  6. Bring to a simmer and let it thicken.
  7. Remove from heat and serve.

Variations

  • If using turkey, follow same directions, use turkey drippings instead.
  • Can use half and half in place of milk.
  • Can use broth in place of milk.
  • If you do not have enough drippings, you can use broth.
  • I love to add a few small chunks of ham to my gravy.
  • Tip: when I cook a ham, I add 1 – 2 cups of water to the pan so I can use that for gravy.
